I hate to leave the Village, I hate to leave him, but the thought of my responsibilities at home tug at me and I’ll go crazy if I leave this thing with my dad hanging out there too long.

My bag is packed, sitting on his hall table by the front door.

We’re in his kitchen, hovering over cold cups of coffee. I don’t want this time to end, but I’ve got to get going. “That was a beautiful night. Thank you for taking me. And thanks for coming to get me at the last minute. I wish I could stay longer, but I need to go home and sort this all out with my dad.”

“There’s no way I’m letting you go back there alone. Not after the state you were in last time you were there.” He dumps our cups in the sink, washing them out.

I don’t want to burden him. He’s here because he needs to work. There’s no reason to involve him in my crazy family drama. “I’ll call Beau if I need someone,” I say.

His eyes hold mine. “No. You won’t.”

Is he serious? His gaze is burning through mine, daring me to argue.

He’s serious.

Boundaries, Jules. You have to set boundaries with men like the Bachmans.

I put on my best lecture voice. “I’d like to tell you two things I just heard that I didn’t like. First, there is no you ‘letting’ me go home. If I want to go home, I will. And secondly, you can’t tell me I can’t see Beau. What is your problem with him, anyway?”

He runs a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. “Look. He and I have some business between us we need to settle. I don’t want you talking to him until he and I have had a face-to-face. I’m going to set him straight.”

What problems could they possibly have with one another, other than a few childish spars over our Scrabble game? “Set him straight? Preston, what’s gotten into you? You two barely know one another.”

Agitated, Preston paces the floor as he speaks. “Why is he so into you, anyway?”

“We’re friends. We have been for a long time.” I toss my hand on my hip. “Why, is that a problem?”

He scoffs. “I have female friends and I sure as hell don’t keep as close of an eye on them as he does with you.”

“But you look out for Richmond, don’t you? What’s the difference?” I ask.

“What’s the difference?” He stares at me like I’m crazy. “Can’t you see the man is in love with you?”

No.

Noooooo…

This is not happening.

I try to hold back but it bubbles up from my belly, tickling my throat. I can’t stop it from coming. I let out a loud laugh but in trying to hide it, it turns into the most hideous snort.

“Are you,” he stares me down, “snorting at me?”

I shake my head, covering my mouth with my hand. “Oh my gosh, Preston. You’re jumping to the wrong conclusions. You don’t have anything to worry about between me and Beau.
